Don Lemmon's KNOW HOW

Hello, I am Don Lemmon. That's me in that picture. I am writing this entire page at 3:00 in the morning without editing or looking back so you can see that I am just trying to "keep it real." Look at that picture again. No, not because I think I look great. In fact, this isn't the best photograph I could find of myself but I am using it to make a point. The point is that I really do not work out as often as you think, I simply eat the way I describe on this site and yet I am in better shape than 90% of the population by far.

This is not a modeling photograph and it wasn't touched up in PhotoShop. It is a real photo taken by a friend after we went for a walk through Red Rock Canyon in Nevada ... There is no posing, no sucking in the gut, no love handles, no pumping up, no make up, no professional help and... Nothing fancy... It's just me... Don Lemmon, shirt off, turning around without expecting to have his picture to be taken, and ready to head home from a day of doing nothing. Just like most of us spend our days off... I was just being myself....

The difference is that I weigh well over 210 pounds in that photo and you are wondering how that is possible without drugs. It is simple. You are looking at a guy who simply follows a food separation eating plan and hadn't lifted weights in literally 3 years on the day this shot was snapped. I am not kidding you. Sure, I work out a little bit now as I do not want to be weak and frail when I get old but at that point in my life, I was lazy.... However, I always ate right... Is that so hard to swallow?

Sure, I walked each day, stretched a little to keep from being completely sloth-like, but wouldn't you think I should be a bit out of shape for sitting behind a desk 2/3 of my life and eating 4000 calories a day without fail? Yes, you sure would.... If people would just separate their foods, no matter what they think it means to eat correctly, and I am not implying that you are required to eat a boring menu plan or starve yourself. I think you already know I do not go for fad supplements, meal replacements or creatine.

You can look your best with less effort as well. I know the picture I used doesn't make things real clear but I also know you can see that I am about 10% body fat and that alone has you thinking... I do have your attention, right? I mean, come on, who wouldn't kill to have their physique under such control for so little effort while eating so much food? You would and you know it. And I am here to help you do just that. Man, that's what it is all about. Helping people, making them happy and being thanked for the effort.

So here we are today and you want to know a little more about me. So let's start with a little info on my life growing up and then you can get into the story of my business by reading the blog. I am not much different from most people. I am originally from a small town in Ohio called Newton Falls . My mother ran a convenient store and my father retired from an aluminum factory. I suppose that means I had a normal upper lower class upbringing as a latch key kid but I was also always known as the 'little' guy at school.

Honestly, I dreaded every minute of being “little.” I used to think I was small because I wouldn't drink milk or eat cheese but that wasn't it. I also used to think I had digestive issues because I lost my appendix and tonsils at a young age. But that wasn't it either. Whatever it was, I remained under weight from as long as I could remember until I turned 14 in 1982. That is when I was in 9th grade, tired of being picked on, and I got my first weight bench. At 100 pounds and 5'4" in height, I discovered there was more to it.

Rather than just owning a set of cast iron weights, I was expected to use the darn thing. Unfortunately, I lacked the motivation to do anything about it, probably because I felt too wimpy to bother and partly since I heard how strong some of the other guys my age already became... I was discouraged.... However, when I was 16 (by then 5'8" but only 10 pounds heavier) I discovered the truth.... I was skinny because I didn't eat much of anything at all and so I began to eat. I ate a lot and often.... And it worked.

Unfortunately, after pounding down the food for a few months without method, I got fat. What was I supposed to do now? Being the ever interested and inquisitive teen, I asked questions. I turned to my health teacher, my doctor, my karate instructor, and all my friends that lifted weights... Anyone who would listen or had an input.... Each had a different solution of course so I withdrew their common ground and made some modifications. Those changes included nothing more than giving up fast foods.

Soon there after though, I started using my weight bench but I felt good about it immediately because I was seeing results. This was in 1984. By 1985 I decided to go into the service before starting college, directly out of high school. I knew I wasn't ready for making a commitment to studies just yet. I wasn't mature enough to take it seriously and I knew it. Sticking with my hobby through 1986 and while in the Army, I came to the conclusion I wanted to become a physical therapist or a physician.

By the end of 1988, I was getting ready to finish my enlistment and a decision had to be made. I remember telling people though that I wanted to be a nutritionist and being laughed at. "What kind of living will you make doing that?" I really hadn't considered that. We all make or take steps based upon instinct and being a nutritionist is what I decided I wanted to do. I grew from 5'8" and 108 pounds to 5'10 and 180 pounds in less than 3 years of my life and I truly enjoyed telling folks how.

I couldn't become a nutritionist overnight, but as long as I could work in health and fitness, I was thrilled. I landed my first job as a trainer that first week out. Thankfully I was able to keep training people and raise money for my move to California in 1990. But that's where my eyes opened. The competition was so fierce I quit almost as soon as I began and took a job as the district manager of several San Fernando Valley General Nutrition Centers. I realized the customers knew more than I did about nutrition so I quit.

I found another job two months later in physical therapy while studying and preparing for medical school. This was 1991 and if I hadn't made the decisions to quit my medical pursuits, I wouldn't have progressed, nor discovered the truth.... I actually did know what I was talking about. I just didn't know exactly why what I was advising people worked and therefore how to explain it properly. However, with a little hands-on experience and practical education, within a year, by 1992, I had things tackled.

I was on my way to what you know me for today. Mid-way through 1992 I caught on again to something else. By pursuing a career in sports medicine, things sounded more to me like I was getting a license to prescribe otherwise illegal drugs to athletes. What I was being taught or told, what people thought was right, was in fact so “not” right, it was completely wrong or at least contradict what keeps the body healthy. It may keep you moving, but it will not work for long.

Eventually things fail and all because you are doing nothing to prevent further damage. If anything, I was being taught how to patch people up, give them band-aids, but I was not being taught how to save them from one day requiring surgery. I was told, "A healthy patient is a lost customer, Don." I desperately wanted to teach, educate and coach people in preventative measures as opposed to dealing with the net result of their poor health all the time. Unfortunately, sometime people are 'too far gone' to help.

Let's face it, some people aren't willing to save themselves. Possibly it is because they are brainwashed by the medical community, I don't know. I quit and turned back to the warm market instead. At the time, that would have been my personal training business and writing. That summer I began writing a book called Subscribed Fitness which by word of mouth alone sold thousands of copies throughout Southern California. From there, I worked on expanding the book, all while moving to Vegas.

After beginning a full time life as a writer and trainer at Gold's Gym, I had plenty of time to consider my paths. Within a couple of years my focus shifted to making videos to accompany my soon to be published book, they were all the rage at the time, but this is another story. In fact, my book content was a different story as well. Fads had changed and instead of low fat dieting, I needed to lead people away from what they thought "the Zone diet" was and into my own KNOW HOW principles. That fad lasted about 4 years.

The Zone still sells today but the low fat fad it replaced has long ago faded into the sunset and now we content with the Atkins program. I think people have caught onto the fact that most things are fads now so in 1997, I released a KNOW HOW primer to teach people how to eat right outside of the Zone, Atkins and even to debate Muscle Media 2000's low fat nonsense. I called it Don Lemmon's KNOW HOW. Upon the advice of an agent, the title changed to Secrets to a Perfect Body.

Fickle as I am, I later changed Book One's title to Exercise & Nutrition: The Truth… And yet I still hadn't a publisher willing to touch it. With 2 nickels to rub together and a few friends who believed in me, I built a website in March of 1998 that within a few years made me the #1 Nutritionist on the Internet. Sure, it also led to having my own radio show, publishing magazines and guest starring on TV shows, etc... And that all helped, but my reputation grew, and my integrity opened doors.

Looking back upon the release of each KNOW HOW book and nutritional food supplement, I feel so ever grateful to be here. A lot has happened to me over the years but one thing has remained the same. I know that what I offer people is something to believe in. Sure, you can claim that I will say anything to sell you my products or others I endorse like Blake Kassel's Bodylastics... I will still be here as long as the net is alive either way and I rest easily at night because I am an honest man. I am not like most online gurus who make things up as I go along.

I am also married to the most wonderful woman I ever knew who gave up her career to spend her life with me and did so without my asking her to. We just had our first child, bought a new home near the mountains where I will be finishing the novels I have always dreamed of releasing and plan to have another baby soon enough... My life is good and I believe it is because I have been good to the people who put me here. And I thank you. If you EVER have any questions, just drop me a line. For my email address: CLICK HERE
